Multiple Oppositions
Contrast Sets
Multiple Oppositions contrast sets for the multiple oppositions approach. Perfect if you child has a phoneme collapse*. Also works great for working on phonemic awareness skills.
__________
*Because phoneme collapses are often unique and can vary from child to child, it is difficult to provide a "pre-set" or "grab & go" set of targets that will work for every kid. These sets use simple rimes and include words to contrast that have different onsets.
How to choose your targets:
- Identify which sounds your child "collapses" or substitutes ("What sound is the child using for multiple other sounds")
- Choose 3-5 of the sounds that the child is collapsing to contrast (Tip: Get the most bang for your buck by choosing targets that differ in as many aspect of place, manner and voicing as possible -- this helps you utilize the multiple oppositions approach effectively).
What do I do?
-
Print and prep:
- The errored target (the sound the is substituted for all the others)
- 3-5 targets with your chosen contrast sounds (ideally maximally opposed)
- Start with auditory bombardment and familiarization tasks; be sure to do some auditory discrimination tasks to ensure the child knows what each target is
- Lay out the targets so that the child can see them all
- Begin contrasting the errored target with other contrasts, one at a time
- As the child is able to produce the contrasts, practice contrasts in random order to improve skill and generalization
- Repeat with multiple rimes until you still to see change and improvement!
